History of Dawn of War
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War was announced in August 2003 by Black Isle Studios, on the same day that Warhammer 40,000: Twilight of the Republic was announced. The first public demo of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War was released on May 14, 2003 on PlayStation 2.
The game's cinematic trailer was released in August 2003 and has been seen by more than eight million people on YouTube.
Gameplay
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War introduced two new game mechanics to the series; the strategic deployment and the three-phase attack. The strategic deployment system provides the player an overview of the battlefield and the movements of their units. The three-phase attack system allows for more tactical depth by increasing the number of units engaged during each attack phase, and allows the player to target individual enemy units.
The game allows the player to play as one of the six races: the Blood Angels, the Dark Angels, the Space Marines, the Ultramarines, the Tyranids, and the Orks. Two playable races from Warhammer 40,000: Twilight of the Imperium are made available in Dawn of War: as the Tyranids, a previously unseen race, and the Emperor's Children. The humans and the Eldar make their first appearance in the Dawn of War series, although they were playable in Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium and Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch.
The game features three types of missions. Campaigns include typical 40k space marine/Black Templars encounters, which are played out over several missions. Battles allow the player to take control of a single unit, and last between ten minutes and a few hours. "Chronicles" is an addition to the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War formula that was introduced with the expansion of the same name. The story mode consists of five chapters that follow a single battle, covering the sides of each faction during different time periods.
The game introduced a new class, the Space Marine Librarian, an archeologist unit that can research enemy equipment.
